Juniper Berry Essential Oil
Juniperus communis (L.) is an evergreen tree belonging to the Cupressaceae family, native to Asia, Europe, North Africa, and North America. The berries of this tree contain an aromatic essential oil. Juniper Berry essential oil is a natural ingredient used in pharmaceutical, perfumery and cosmetics. [1].
The essential oil of Juniper berries generally contains monoterpenes (alpha-Pinene, beta-pinene, Limonene, Sabinene, beta-Mirsen), aromatic hydrocarbon (p-Cymen), alcohol (Terpinen-4-ol) and oxide (1.8-Cineole). With its high Sabinene content, it is known to benefit liver function and digestion, relieve arthritis and soothe skin. It also has strong antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal activities [1, 2].
Historically, Juniperus communis has been used to treat infectious diseases. British Herbal Pharmacopoeia cites its use for cystitis and rheumatism. It is regarded as an efficient detoxifier and diuretic with extracts used commercially in diuretic and laxative preparations [1, 2].
