Pennyroyal Essential Oil
The genus mint (Mentha) belongs to the Lamiaceae family and includes 42 species, 15 hybrids, and hundreds of subspecies, varieties, and cultivars (Mentha piperita, Mentha spicata, Mentha aquatica, and Mentha arvensis) [1].
Pennyroyal essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of the plant. This essential oil contains a high percentage of Pulegone. It also contains components such as Piperitone, Menthol, Menthon [2,3].
This essential oil is known to have anthelmintic, spasmolytic and antimicrobial properties. It has been used as an expectorant, menstrual regulator, diuretic, and for respiratory problems.
It was also used as a traditional herb and folk remedy as an abortifacient [3,4].
Directions:
Pennyroyal essential oil may be applied via inhalation or topically. Before using this essential oil, carefully read Warning & Safety Requirements.
To apply to the skin, do not use undiluted essential oils on your skin.
Pennyroyal essential oil has high pulegone content, which is toxic and can even cause acute liver and lung damage even in small quantities. Extreme caution in handling is needed [4].
Used topically, In addition to its stimulating effect, it is used to relieve muscle spasms.
It can be used as a natural preservative additive in cosmetic products.
Used in aromatherapy, It can be used as an insect repellent .
Suggested Uses:
Try adding it to a bath or diffuser as aromatherapy, or combining with different essential oils to strengthen its effect.
Add to a diffuser: 2 drops Citronella essential oil, 2 drops Tea Tree essential oil, and 2 drops Pennyroyal essential oil to repel insects and mosquitos.
